Earlier today, Microsoft confirmed that its next operating system, codenamed Windows 7, would in fact be called just that when it hits shelves at some point in the next few years. Good on 'em, I say: a simple, no-nonsense name suggests they're approaching it with a clearer eye than they had cooking up the hypefest that was Vista. But if there's an instinct that Microsoft will find hard to put to bed, it's the one ...

So there you go. CBC’s Hockey Anthem Challenge winner, out of almost 15,000 entries submitted, is Colin Oberst’s Canadian Gold. The one with the bagpipes. Hockey Night in Canada made a big thing about it, with loud congratulations from Don Cherry. And Oberst takes home a $100,000 cheque. UPDATE: CBC has posted the announcement, new theme and a season intro montage in Quicktime format. With the new theme comes new intro graphics as well. This ...

Here is my platform, if I were running for Prime Minister. Broadly, I will: Make Canada a recognized global leader in communications technology, and energy technology Increase regulation of financial markets Address climate change Strongly articulate the Canadian Vision to the world, one that focuses on our success at integrating a multiethnic population, based on shared values of a strong social fabric, and [NOTE: this sounds a bit bullshitty, but I strongly believe that in ...

Nothing was going to make me miss Third Coast. It’s that important to me. I’ve been looking forward to the conference since I registered in August. You get to the point where you are so invested in achieving your goal that nothing will stop you. Or, rather, you convince yourself that you will stop at nothing to see your goal through. So, when I received a number of messages telling me that the Universe was ...

Like the saying goes, "when the going gets tough, the tough build a giant fucking guitar boat and cruise around in that mother like PUT PUT PUT". Am I right? I'm wrong. Anyway, this is Indie rocker Josh Pyke taking a fully functional guitar boat for a spin in the music video for his song "Make You Happy". I tried to find the video and couldn't, but apparently the dude's got some musical skills. But ...

Seeing foreclosures and evictions happening right and left makes people feel vulnerable. They identify with the people having to move, and it makes them feel more and more nervous about their own personal security. While I feel for people who have to go through the pain and humiliation of a foreclosure and eviction, I can’t help thinking that in a majority of cases, no one in this was entirely innocent and without blame. Before I ...

The things that has always alarmed me most about the right wing Republican/conservative/FOX News-watching types is how they wear their own IGNORANCE as a badge of honor! I can't get my head around the notion of how unashamed they are of their own ignorance. It used to be that abject stupidity was something to be embarrassed about. Is it somehow now HIP these days to be a total dumbass? Did I miss the memo? It's ...

This is simply untrue. While my politics are very much left-wing, there are some very smart people who believe in traditional republican values. To dismiss all republicans as either rich or stupid is just ignorant...and I know *that's* not a badge of honour.

The infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) probably hasn’t escaped the notice of anyone who has used a computer in the last decade or so. If you haven’t seen it on your own PC, you probably know someone it has happened to. There is actually a ridiculous amount of BSOD photos to be found around the Web. And not just of PCs. As this post will show you, the blue error screen seems to show ...

Happy birthday, Mr. Lennon. Yoko Ono sends the Boing Boing community a video, embedded above, and explains a project launching this week in honor of John Lennon's birthday, the "Imagine Peace Tower" in Iceland -- a country that could use a little extra compassion this week, for sure, given the harsh effects of the economic collapse there. More on the project: On 9 Oct 2008, John Lennon’s birthday, Yoko Ono asks the people of Iceland ...

If YouTube had a Ten Commandments carved on stone tablets, well, this would be one of them. To wit:* Shrimp * Landmines * War of the Worlds * Lord of the Rings * Friday the 13th I'd like to see one of these with a video of the stock market indexes free-falling towards zero, and sad guys on trading floors. Because so far, that's not funny.
