The World Bank’s web of data could be webbier (2)

As Stefan Tilkov notes tearfully, the REST API for the World Bank data leaves something to be desired. The URI to fetch the list of countries looks like this: http://open.world... In my review of the Leonard Richardson and Sam Ruby book RESTful Web Services I summarized their best practices for making a service “look like the web”: Data are organized as sets of resources Resources are addressable An application presents a broad surface area of ...Shared by Mark (16) michael.twofish (7)Contribute comment -
World Bank data now available through APIs (7)

By way of David Stephenson I’ve learned that the World Bank now offers an API for several of its data sets on development, governance, and business conditions, plus a collection of photos. Here are the indicators you can explore, for many countries, going back to about 1960 (though the data are sparse in some cases): Agricultural land (% of land area) Forest area (% of land area) Surface area (sq. km) Foreign direct investment, net ...Shared by Javed (131) Ken Kennedy (11) Kin (23) Mark (16) mndoci (53) Patrick (19) ScorpFromHell (11)- mndoci said: We want more data ... never enough :)

Flybe Airline Opening API to Combat Screen Scraping (1)

ProgrammableWeb (183) permalink
Should you let people scrape data from your site or offer a web service API instead? This is one of the classic arguments for offering an API: to get better control over how your data is accessed and who gets that access. A recent news story about Flybe, Europe’s largest independent regional airline carrier, demonstrates a case where this was the main driver for creating an API. For Flybe, having third party service and applications ...Shared by Mark (16)Contribute comment -

A little over two years ago, we launched Picasa Web Albums to make publishing photos online easy. Now Picasa Web Albums hosts billions of online photos from around the globe, with users adding millions of new snapshots every day. Each of these photos records a different moment, or a different perspective, but one thing they all have in common is that in each case, the person behind the camera wanted to share their experience with ...Shared by Abhishek (9) Adam (15) Adam Zuercher (13) AdamB (16) Adi (14) Adrian (19) Alberto (9) Andrew (30) Andrew (47) Andy Beal (23) AndyDrew (8) Angus (43) Antonio Ortiz (37) Appu (19) atul (81) baixinho (25) Bryan (19) Bwana (74) C.K. Video-sharing goes to work (14)

It was a mere three years ago that YouTube streamed its first video, forever changing the way we share experiences with people regardless of time and distance. At home, equipped with ubiquitous technology like a digital camcorder, a computer webcam or even a mobile phone, we can easily create video clips and share them with our friends and family. Technology is no longer a barrier on either end. All you need is a browser and ...Shared by Adam (10) Adaulfo (15) atul (81) dawn (19) kevinpshan (16) Krisalis78 (35) Mark (16) mfelkins (8) Mike F (465) Rizzn (76) Steve (15) Uri (10) zeb (3) शंतनु (5)- Steve said: Amazing to me that YouTube is only 3 years old. Is Google Chrome going to be the Firefox killer? (1)

Google is going to release in the coming hours what looks like a revolutionary new entry in the browser arena: Google Chrome. The GUI design and engineering effort behind Google Chrome looks impressive. What is more, Chrome is going to be released under an open source license. In spite of the sugary rhetoric (“it’s in our interest to make the internet better”– yeah, thanks Google), is this going to be the ultimate Firefox killer? Along with the rapid growth of video APIs, the marketplace of photo-related APIs continues to expand rapidly. Since we looked at 36 Photo APIs earlier this year, we’ve added nearly a dozen new ones, and there are now 47 APIs tagged “photo” in our web service directory. The best known and most used photo API continues to be the Flickr API, now with 365 Flickr mashups listed here.
