A tipster has sent us five photos of brand new works by semi-secret superfamous street artist Banksy. All five were just put up in New Orleans, to commemorate the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on August 29. Some of the pieces relate directly the hurricane and its disastrous aftermath; others are targeted at the legacy of Fred Radtke, an infamous N.O. anti-graffiti crusader known as the "Gray Ghost" for his practice of painting over graffiti ...

The antipollution device bolted onto your car's exhaust pipes contains platinum, an expensive metal. Some recycling shops will pay $200 for a used converter — whether it comes from a junked vehicle or was freshly sawed from beneath a Toyota Land Cruiser at the Stanford Shopping Center. I typed up the best parts of a not-online report by the San Francisco Daily Post: From San Francisco to San Jose, scores of unlucky car owners are ...

If nothing else, the recent chart ascents of M.I.A.'s Kala and "Paper Planes" are fascinating for the parallels they evoke with... Moby. Think about it: Play was a modest-selling album by a critics' pet that thanks to truckloads of advertising wound up selling a huge number of copies; Kala finished second in Idolator Pop 2007 and is now climbing the charts (currently at No. 37, having sold 11,000 copies) thanks to its use in a ...

Last night I was clicking through the zillionth or so argument on the Internet I've come across this decade, and as with approximately 98 million-billion-trillion of them, it hinged, to some degree, on the definition of "indie." We've gone through this a quintillion times on this blog, too, so I've decided to ask everyone to make a subtle, yet important semantic shift: The next time you're tempted to use the word "indie rock" to describe ...

Fashion magazine Numéro Tokyo will start releasing some great reader give-aways with their October 2008 issue. The give-away will last for overall three months, starting in October and ending in December. The October give-away is a real goodie - a Louis Vuitton produced mouse pad, featuring the Monogramouflage pattern, that was created this year by artist Takashi Murakami. In November they will be giving away a product by Mastermind Japan, more on that soon. Via ...

by Marcel Mutoni Yesterday, I briefly touched on Phil Jackson receiving an honorary degree from his Alma matter, and today we get more from Phil’s acceptance speech. The Zen Master reflected on the unbelievable amount of talent he’s had the good fortune of coaching, and when asked who the greatest athlete he ever coached was, Jackson offered the University of North Dakota crowd a surprising answer. From the OC Register: No, the player Jackson called ...

Google's food cutbacks are more targeted than we'd first heard. Dinner will still be served in buildings which house engineers, according to a former Google chef who's made his own inquiries about the changes at the Googleplex cafeterias. Google's only eliminating the evening meal in cafes frequented by nontechnical employees. Somehow, this strikes us as worse for morale. If there were any doubt that Google's non-engineers were second-class citizens, consider it erased. No comp-sci degree? ...
