I got in an interesting conversation earlier this week while at a dinner with Sarah Lacy and a number of active D.C. technology participants. At one point in the conversation we began discussing the concept of “ad supported” businesses. If you hang out in the internet entrepreneur circles, you can’t talk to five people without one of them telling you about their hot new business which will of course be advertising supported. I will not ...

Recently, we reconstructed a perfect copy of Apple I BASIC, the first piece of software Apple ever sold - in 1976. Now it is time to make something useful out of it. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could use Apple I BASIC to replace, say, Perl? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could do this:$ cat reverse.bas#!/usr/bin/apple1basic10 DIM A$(100)20 INPUT A$30 FOR I = LEN(A$) TO 1 STEP -140 PRINT A$(I,I);50 NEXT I60 PRINT70 ...

I never agreed that Twitter is what some people call a micro-blogging service. Just didn't feel much like blogging to me. But FriendFeed is another story. I am using it more like a blogging tool than Twitter. For example... 1. Yesterday I snuck out to see the new Batman movie on its opening day. I wrote my first review on FF. In the morning (now) I have more thoughts. If Heath Ledger hadn't died, and ...

"Like" Is a FriendFeed feature that Twitter should have. It's a misnomer, it's not about liking something. When you like something that means you recommend it. Everyone who follows you gets the recommendation. How it would work in Twitter. 1. You're reading something I wrote in Twitter. 2. You say you "like" it -- which is like adding it to your Favorites (same UI). 3. It goes on your output stream. All the people who ...

Most anyone currently wielding an iPhone or iPod touch plus the 2.0 software update today is well aware of the volume of convenient apps made themselves available upon Apple’s (somewhat tarnished) App Store launch on July 11. In the social networking department, the most popular comes, perhaps predictably, by way of Facebook. Among the top free applications listed today, it sits in ninth place, just ahead of AIM. Of course, we’ve already spoken about the ...

Publishing keeps getting cheaper. That's been the constant push, the practical application of Moore's Law in my neck of the woods. I've always been a publishing guy, and that's always been how I viewed computers, and it's why I got into them in the first place. Most people don't get this, the real story of blogging is just the continuation of the process. You could just have easily focused on the laser printer, Aldus Pagemaker ...

Guest Post By Rob Diana of Regular Geek (Twitter/FriendFeed)Well, the microblogging API space sure got interesting in a hurry.First, on Thursday, Louis Gray reported that Twitter was throttling unauthenticated API requests. This obviously would effect several applications in a very bad way. Later in the day, Dave Winer let everyone know that Identi.ca has implemented the Twitter API. And on Friday, in a surprising move, TechCrunch announced that Twitter is sending the XMPP firehose to ...

A monitoring process on one of our database machines spiraled out of control, causing the machine to become unresponsive. We’ve killed the process and are working on restoring services. Thank you for your patience. Update: and we’re back. Load times may be a bit slow until all services have restarted.

After another night of downtime there is some good news coming out of Twitter land this morning. This is big news not only in that it means Twitter is feeling confident enough about its service to give ...

That the Twitter service is choking up every now and then is nothing new. The Twitter team had made numerous attempts to improve the continuity of the service, as they reduced features such as the reply tab, capping pagination and blocking instant messaging from time to time. It seems that all these efforts have not reduced their down-time at all. Louis Gray mentions that the list of reduced features can be extended once again, as ...
