Today I want to introduce you to a very special little boy. This is Reece. He is fourteen months old. Reece has Down Syndrome. And I love this child like I didn’t think it possible to love a baby. I delivered Reece with my own hands and it was an experience like no other. Patty and I have eight children but he is the only one I have delivered. We used a midwife for his ...

Eric Etheridge recently sent over a copy of his book Breach of Peace, and it has literally taken my breath away. An exhaustive photographic and archival survey of the lives of the Mississippi Freedom Riders through their original mug shots, it seems an incredibly important and poignant reminder of what can be achieved by ordinary people. Here's a description and synopsis from the very helpful Breach of Peace blog: Breach of Peace is a book about ...

Nikon currently operates with two sensor formats in its DSLRs, DX and FX. Practically speaking, the FX format is the same size as the old 35mm film frame. The DX is smaller, which results in a “crop factor” of 1.5x when compared to the 35mm “full frame.” Thus, a 50mm lens appears to have the focal length of a 75mm lens on a DX camera. The Nikon D3 and D700 are FX format cameras. All ...

Republican National Convention coverage By Carlos Miller It is getting to be very clear that St. Paul police are deliberately arresting people for exercising their First Amendment rights, whether it be protesting, documenting the protests or simply going about their business near the protests. Even as three University of Kentucky journalists were released from jail on Wednesday, at least three other journalists, including a blogger from California, are still in custody, according to the ACLU, ...

* I want to mention that this article has been revised after receiving a helpful comment from yz (check out the beautiful images on his photoblog). I appreciate the clarifications, we’re all here to learn… In this day and age it’s possible to create quite beautiful photographs without fully understanding focus and depth of field. As long as your auto focus lens purrs when you hit the button and a little sensor lights up on ...

I've had the most surreal PayPal experience over the last week or so. I've long had a US PayPal account, but last week needed to create a Japanese PayPal account because I wanted to have a purchase shipped to my house (in Kyoto) from a vender that ships only to the verified “home address” of the paying PayPal account. So, I created a Japan PayPal account, and registered my credit card with it. The credit ...

Thanks to Didier Jouret, who sent me a link to this video from a Pieter Van Impe "Trash the Dress" -type shoot. This one is not so much about lighting, but it does include all of the typical stuff: Beach, sunset, trippy beats, happy couple, some champagne, a little nipple pinching, a kite-mounted Canon G9 for overheads, ... wait, WHAT?Dude, I so want that G9 kite mount. He uses the G9 on a monster light ...

The McCain campaign has continued their slow descent into madness with their latest approach of basically saying “Don’t blame us, blame the media” for the Palin scandal. From Huffington Post: John McCain’s campaign on Wednesday angrily called for an end to questions about its review of Sarah Palin’s background, deriding a “faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee” for vice president. “This nonsense is over,” declared senior campaign adviser Steve Schmidt ...

Link: Huffington Post Sarah, Sarah, you barely even let me get done writing about what a horrible VP pick you are, and then you are at it again. Great, another “Christian Conservative” selling war as a “mission from God”. Speaking as a Christian myself, this kind of thing is just appalling on so many levels, and perhaps what is even more infuriating to me is that I used to buy this kind of crap. This ...

Photo by Scott Bourne One of the best ways to decide if you want to purchase a lens is to rent it first. Additionally, some photographers will so rarely use a speciality lens that it doesn’t make sense to do anything BUT rent. The problem is, unless you live in a very large city, you probably don’t have a camera store that rents lenses near you. Now you can rent lenses online. Several companies specialize ...

So, I am sure the media will spend the day fawning all over the idea of a woman becoming a Republican nominee for Vice President today, much like they have with Obama becoming the first African American major party nominee. But, the elephant in the room is this: in an election in which McCain has relentlessly hammered Obama as “not experienced enough”, particularly on national security & foreign policy issues, and in an election where ...

These days, authors, artists, and photographers are likely to find one or more of their creative works used without permission. One defense to the purported infringement is often that it is a "fair use." The challenge then is determining whether the unauthorized use is an infringement or fair use. While only a court of law can make that decision, understanding what makes a use "fair" will help you protect your work. Tags: ((fair use)), ((copyright)), ...

And then be put together all pretty through the glory of post-production.How long did all of this take? Isom was in China for six weeks, ...
