Last month, an appellate court ruling fueled an ongoing debate in healthcare: What is a hospital's responsibility when responding to a reference check? In essence, the court validated a widespread practice: Providing merely "name, rank and serial number" does not subject the former employer to a lawsuit by the new employer if the employee turns out to be a "bad apple." Despite the ruling, questions remain regarding the extent of a hospital's duty to disclose ...

Talk about turning lemons into Lemonade. The parents of 18-year-old Shaun Malone, placed a GPS tracking device into his car to make sure he was obeying traffic laws. The model they installed would email them if he ever went over the speed limit and they could check in real time to make sure he was where he said he was going to be. Why would Randy Newman take heat for speaking the truth? It's not racism if it's based in reality, I say.

Other churches do background checks on their volunteers though, Brother Potter. Most people don't know the Mormon church doesn't have a paid staff, and that the members accept calls to serve in these ways. As a member of the church, and a background screening specialist, I have no problem implementing a background check on all volunteers that accept callings to watch after children...during church, or at scout activities, etc. I think it would be wise, as a matter of fact.
