Brooklyn artist D.Billy has created several site-specific installations around the city using balloons as his primary medium. He writes: Using colorful media such as twisting balloons, party streamers, and artist tape, I have begun to add visual representations of sound effects to public spaces as a sort of dimensional graffiti. After embellishing the found scenes and photographing the results, I leave my additions in place to engage passers-by for as long as the materials hold ...

Radiohead's camera-free video for House of Cards went live this week, and by golly it's a treat, like the Matrix seen through a pinpression board: There's a full page up at Google Code about this, including a genuinely interesting Making Of and details on how the data generated in the scanning-as-filming can be download for your own creative thrills. Now if I could just put that data into Manic Miner...

A Washington Post article last week entitled "Churches Retool Mission Trips" examines the criticism that short term missions are high cost and lack value. HT: Seth Barnes Its a good article and worth reading. I share many of the same concerns. Yes - a $2000 house built for $30,000 by an overseas mission team might not be the best use of money and someone needs to rethink these kinds of trips. But what are the ...

Living in the city, I don't get to see a lot of stars, so these 'starry outdoor lights' from Firebox really appeal. Especially since they run entirely on clean, green, solar energy!

“There is an African saying that says it is through other people that we become people. By tapping into and supporting the passions and drivers of a swirling, ever-changing network of people, I am made better. I am made stronger, smarter, and deeper, and more together in a way that I could not be, on my own. Twitter helps us become more human, in a time when it is more important than ever before to ...

"My missionaries in a foreign field" I have to confess: that line in Coldplay's new song "Viva La Vida" caught my ear. I bought the album a few weeks ago and really like it. I have played the number one song Viva La Vida a few times with my kids, reading the lyrics, and taking a few guesses as to the meaning. Is Chris Martin thinking of a historical figure (Napolean as the cover art ...

Police say UFO was just the Moon [BBC News] [...] The Control Room conversation, which took place in May, was recorded - and below is a transcript: Control Room: "South Wales Police, what's your emergency?" Caller: "It's not really. I just need to inform you that across the mountain there's a bright stationary object." Control room: "Right." Caller: "If you've got a couple of minutes perhaps you could find out what it is? It's been ...
