June 30th was a day for Iraqis to celebrate, as U.S. troops finally withdrew from their major cities. After more than six years of foreign soldiers kicking in doors, paying off murderers, and soaking villages with white phosphorous, the Iraqis finally gained control of their land (and their problems). This is part of Obama’s new “grand strategy” to “pull out” from Iraq by December 31, 2011, and until then U.S. forces will remain as night ...

Alaskan governor and former vice-presidential hopeful Sarah Palin got in one last newscycle before the Fourth of July holiday weekend with a brief press conference from her home in Wasilla. Answering no questions afterwards, Palin announced the largely anticipated move of refusing to run for re-election as Governor. The real surprise came with subsequent reports that she would be resigning entirely in a few weeks, leaving the governor’s mansion just over halfway through her first ...

Earlier this year, the unpopular president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, introduced a referendum as a first step toward drafting a new constitution. Opposition to the referendum was strong, with the Honduran Congress, Supreme Court and military all declaring it illegal. Zelaya fired the head of the military for not providing support for the referendum - but was thwarted by the Supreme Court, who deemed the firing illegal, and reinstated General Romeo Velasquez to his post. ...

This has been a weird story. In the United States, if a President tried to organize a referendum to bypass the normal mechanism for a constitutional amendment removing the term limit, then fired his chief of military for not supporting him, then there certainly would have been an impeachment process. I'm not up on the particulars of the Honduran constitution, but it seems like Zelaya was skirting the realm of what's legal, ethical or even in good taste; Term limits are put in place as a means of avoiding dictatorship and excessive rule. What's really weird is that nobody in diplomatic position the international community seems to be arguing anywhere along those lines. It scares me, but I think even GWB would have hesitated to call it a coup.

snydeq writes "Pwn2Own winner Charlie Miller has revealed an SMS vulnerability that could provide hackers with root access to the iPhone. Malicious code sent by SMS to run on the phone could include commands to monitor location using GPS, turn on the phone's microphone to eavesdrop on conversations, or make the phone join a DDoS attack or botnet, Miller said. Miller did not provide detailed description of the SMS vulnerability, citing an agreement with Apple, ...

July 1, 2009 - the day the music wars started in earnest. Last night the guys from Dovecote Records, a small music label based in New York, were hanging out at their local bar. Employees from file sharing startup LimeWire showed up to have a party. There was confusion over the ownership of some pizza, and a riot almost ensued. From the Dovecote Blog: Woman: “Who the FUCK are you? And why are you eating ...

BBC Magazine convinced 13-year-old Scott Campbell to trade in his iPod for a Walkman for a week and see what he thought. Scott thinks the iPod wins when it comes to sound quality, color, weight, and shuffle feature. The Walkman however offers two headphone sockets making it much easier to listen to music with a friend. My favorite part of the review is, "It took me three days to figure out that there was another ...

Gamasutra is running a few articles about this year's Social Gaming Summit, a conference dedicated to how the increasingly popular social media market is influencing the design of games and how they are played. It's a unique market, in which relatively unknown games can attract millions of players over mere weeks, and where the players themselves often become the distributors. When discussing platform support and compatibility, Sebastian de Halleux, COO of developer Playfish, said, "For ...

Thanks to nearly ubiquitous caller ID, it's not difficult to see the what number called but the source of the call is a little murkier. WhoCallsMe? helps solve the mystery of the unknown caller. WhoCallsMe? is a user-driven database of phone numbers. People in the same boat as you, receiving phone calls from annoying warranty scammers and their ilk, have taken the time to post the numbers and comments to the database. The site doesn't ...
