Some videos: Helium: Arsenic: Oxygen: Follow their Youtube channel! What did they need to come up with such a unique project? 5 innovator educators and a video journalist of BBC. That’s how we can change education.

Ioan Raicu, Yong Zhao, and I are running a Workshop on Many Tasks Computing on Grids and Supercomputers (MTAGS) at SC'08 (Austin, Texas, November 17, 2008). The deadline for submissions is August 15. Our goal in convening this workshop is to encourage discussion among those interested in escaping the "SPMD rut" that characterizes much work in parallel, if not grid, computing. We believe that new applications and more powerful computers are spurring increased interest in ...

WikiProfessional was officially launched some weeks ago. So I think it’s time to say a few words about it. WikiProfessional is a new kind of a database. It searches in several sources and helps us how to get the most valuable information. Redundancy of the same facts and opinions within a myriad of web-pages has artificially inflated the size of the Internet. To get a million search results on a query without the ability to ...

There are more and more community sites dedicated to scientists, so they have to come up with at least one unique feature that may make them more useful than the other similar services. Here is a good example, Epernicus, that was created by researchers at Harvard and MIT: Epernicus is a professional networking platform for health and life scientists. Our goal is to connect researchers with their real world scientific networks, enabling them to find ...

There is a whole blogosphere around the idea of transforming medicine into e-health. There are plenty of bloggers who often write about the IT opportunities of medicine and healthcare. But! What about patients? The consumers? Even if we have a Jay Parkinson, what can he do without patients who are ready to use his service? They are called e-patients, and without them there will be no change in the future of medicine. By taking advantage ...

I’ve been playing with Powerset for a while. It seems to be a service that can take us to the world of semantic web or web 3.0. It uses Wikipedia and Freebase as resources. The main idea is to ask questions instead of search for terms. Let’s give it a try. If you make a search for “Who discovered penicillin” in Google, you will see this (Alexander Fleming Discovers Penicillin) and many more similar articles. ...

I thought blogging could be dangerous for our health, but now here is an other opinion. As Scientific American reports: Self-medication may be the reason the blogosphere has taken off. Scientists (and writers) have long known about the therapeutic benefits of writing about personal experiences, thoughts and feelings. But besides serving as a stress-coping mechanism, expressive writing produces many physiological benefits. Research shows that it improves memory and sleep, boosts immune cell activity and reduces ...

A few days ago Amazon Web Services evangelist Jeff Barr released a graph (Figure 1 below) showing the growth of the bandwidth used by their global Web sites versus the bandwidth being consumed by their Web services. It's eye opening because of the dramatic growth in bandwidth being consumed by their customers via their various non-visual, data-only Web services. The adoption of Amazon's Web services is currently driving more network activity than everything Amazon does ...

It wasn't long ago that to be a credible participant in social media one only had to have a decent blog and keep it updated fairly regularly. The rise of social media was an astonishing and novel enough development that most people still don't blog today, despite the enormous influence that blogging and other forms of social media continue to have. One reason is that blogging takes time and takes some skill, both in writing ...
