I don’t want to keep hating on Windows Vista, but it’s hard to stop. Despite Microsoft’s insistence that users love Vista, it’s hard to find much good said about the operating system. Now InfoWorld’s analysis of tracking data shows that, of those that install their performance tool, 35% switch away from Vista, most to Windows XP. The data comes from about 3,000 users of Windows Sentinel, a free program that monitors the user’s system and ...

My friend (and mesh 2008 interview subject) Ethan Kaplan, the vice-president of technology at Warner Brothers Records, has posted an interesting analysis of the browsers and devices that have been accessing the websites of Warner artists. Internet Exploder still makes up the majority of the traffic, but the interesting part is what has been happening in the bottom 1 per cent or so of the access logs: a growing proportion of devices that aren’t computers. ...

Apple has just seeded iPhone 2.1 beta 4 to developers—uninteresting, really, except for the fact that the push notification service has been pulled from the release "for further development." Targeted to hit your iPhone in September, the push service allows apps to receive notifications in the background while they're not running, a godsend for AIM and other messaging apps. Hopefully this doesn't mean it'll be delayed, but we've all learned what happens when iPhone software ...

Perhaps it was the perfectly arranged row of tulips, or the masterfully grown monkeynut trees. Perhaps it was the stunning flock of Chewnicorn that resided in that breathtaking place. One is never sure of how or why these feeling develop, but the end result is always the same -- your neighbor's piñata garden is too beautiful to exist, ...

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, RPGs A recent issue of Famitsu revealed a startling fact about the upcoming demo for Final Fantasy XIII -- the playable preview will apparently last longer than the film that it is packaged with, Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete. For those of you keeping score at home -- the original Advent had a runtime of 101 minutes. Assuming this length will only increase with the director's cut ...

Microsoft's prepping a "Storage 1.0" feature pack for Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008 that adds a few useful storage options for people who really love storing things. None of these are groundbreaking, but they are fundamental to those of you who would like to master Blu-ray discs natively, or read/write ICCD/CCID smart cards. It's one of Microsoft's "feature packs", which are more than just updates in that it pushes new features out ...

Alarm clocks usually jolt us awake leading us to reach for the almighty snooze button. Silence is a conceptual alarm clock that allows you to program multiple alarms and wakes you without any sound. Each person wears a wireless rubber ring with an integrated vibration device that generates a tactile alarm. The snooze function is engaged by shaking your hand. However, each successive time you want to snooze, more movement is required, making sure you ...

Even though I’ve yet to sit down with an MMO, the genre fascinates me. I often find myself sitting in on demos of MMOs, knowing I won’t try the finished game. But Perfect World Entertainment gave me a compelling reason to try “Perfect World International” when it launches into beta next week: the possibility of witnessing “Devil May Cry”‘s Dante riding a velociraptor and — wait for it — “Tekken”s Heihachi on a giant snake. ...

What do you do with a drunken sailor? Wait, I mean, what do you do with a chipset that boasts hardware Blu-Ray decoding, but stutters every 15 seconds and uses 100% of the CPU? Well, Intel has avoided having its belly shaved with a rusty razor by acknowledging that its G45 chipsets (their latest integrated graphics setup) are having serious issues with Blu-Ray playback among other things. AMD wasted no time in pointing out that ...

Sure we know about some of Windows 7's more eye-catching features like multitouch and sweet maps, but Microsoft hasn't reveal a whole about what's under the hood, other than that it'll use Vista's foundation. According to the new Windows 7 dev blog, we'll get our first peek at the Professional Developers Conference on Oct. 27 and the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference the week after. Make it good is all I've got to say. [Engineering Windows ...
