WorldChanging: Misunderstanding Cyberwar (4)

WorldChanging (39) permalink
There’s nothing like the term “cyberwar” to capture a reader’s attention. For those who grew up on “Wargames”, “Sneakers” or William Gibson novels, the term conjures up images of heroic hackers in shadowy basements, frantically tapping on keyboards in a life and death struggle against the enemy on the other side of the glowing CRT screen. It’s a vision that was compelling to senior people in the US Air Force, including former USAF Secretary Michael ...Contribute comment -

Thirty Helens Agree: Xbox Live gaming should be free (2)

I, along with 30 Helens, agree with Don Reisinger on the subject of Xbox Live. Xbox Live Gold memberships should be free. I actually can’t speak for the aforementioned Helens, so let’s just say that Don and I are in complete concurrence. The basic argument is that if Xbox Live Gold memberships were free, instead of $50 per year, Microsoft would have a lot more online players, which they could sell advertising against, which would ...Shared by Joseph (0) Kevin (23)Contribute comment -

Damien Katz recently caused a stir on a bunch of the blogs I read with his post entitled REST, I just don't get it where he wrote As the guy who created CouchDB, I should be a big cheerleader for RESTful architectures. But the truth is, I just don't get it. For CouchDB, REST makes absolutely insanely perfect sense. Read a document, edit, put the document back. Beautiful. Jeff neglects to mention that these frameworks also provide some useful shortcuts (like the $() function in Prototype) that have nothing to do with cross-browser compatibility, but are simply usability enhancements. I've been playing with Prototype and enjoying it, and plan to dig into Dojo in the near future. JavaScript has become an essential tool, and will become an increasingly important part of the computing landscape, even for server-side programming. On top of that, it is also the new Basic: for many people, it is their first exposure to programming.
