An announcement was expected as early as this week [National Post BCE and Telus in 3G network pact], but apparently the spell checking and t crossing on the PR release is taking a little longer. The cat is pretty much out of the bag however, they may as well tell us the full news. What might an HSPA announcement mean? For one thing they will be among the first to roll out a “naked” HSPA ...

Although buying products from your desktop at home has become just as customary as buying products at the store, few have found reason to buy products on their cell phones. In an attempt to buck that trend and make it easier for consumers to buy products from their cell phone, Billing Revolution announced today that it will offer a ’single-click’ billing and payment service that will streamline mobile purchases. Once consumers are ready to buy ...

I really like the SIP Voice over IP implementation of the Wifi enabled Nokia Nseries phones such as the N95 and the N82. After all, they save me a lot of money these days as SIP to SIP calls for example even between different operators are free. On first thought, voice quality seems to be excellent, I can't tell the difference between a VoIP call and a traditional circuit switched call over a cellular network. ...

In terms of general market perception, LTE has been stealing much of WiMAX's thunder of late. Now obviously we've seen the ascendance of LTE coinciding with one of the periodic nadirs of enthusiasm around WiMAX, and we should start to see the balance redress somewhat when Xohm launches and other smaller deployments also start to come online of the next 4 months. My current expectation is that by 2012/2013, we will see LTE user numbers for ...

Exclusive: In what is likely to be a major shift in the company’s strategy, peer-to-peer startup Joost is going to stop making its desktop client. The decision to suspend the client is likely to be announced soon, I am told. The company is going to a browser-only strategy, in which much of its content is going to be available through a browser-based player. Joost, I am told, will release a small plugin that would embed ...

You’d think that with the FCC conducting so many wireless spectrum auctions, that all that spectrum sold off for billions of dollars would be all used up. The sad truth is that many companies who win spectrum at auction end up sitting on it. All of this “fallow” spectrum is a big problem. A Florida startup called Spectrum Bridge today launched a marketplace to address this problem. Companies that own spectrum can use Spectrum Bridge ...

With 3G usage in the US surpassing Western Europe, it’s not all that surprising to hear that the US has seen mobile internet usage increase almost a third in Q2 2008. When the premier data network in the US takes a nose-dive, people pay attention. Especially those people that were left without data access for hours. AT&T, reeling from the enormous bad-press generated by a multi-state data network outage on the East Coast, left us all hanging with their promise to find out exactly what caused 3G and EDGE data users to go through wireless data-withdrawal. Today, AT&T spokesperson Brad Mays told Ars Technica that the ...

In Korea, where average broadband penetration rate by household hit 90.1 percent last year (and in Seoul reached 107.8 percent), nearly 50 percent of Internet users say they download movies, and the typical users is downloading about a ...

That has some rural users in a tizzy since they use it for their ...

AT&T has been struggling to keep up with demand on its data network since the launch of the iPhone 3G. Tests and speculation have all but absolved the iPhone 3G of any inherent defect as the root of sluggish data network performance on AT&T’s 3G network. At this point, AT&T’s recently upgraded 3G network is seemingly to blame for problematic 3G performance. This morning, AT&T added some icing to their bitter 3G-cake when the No. ...

In a move that should at least somewhat restore your faith in the US legal system and corporate accountability, U.S. District Judge James Selna found that Qualcomm violated (more like ignored) a previous injunction that barred the chip-maker from selling 3G chips in the US that infringed on Broadcom’s patents. This most recent ruling requires that Qualcomm fork over their profits from sales of its QChat push-to-talk technology for Sprint. Court documents indicate that Qualcomm ...

An internal source at AT&T discussed the problems fixed by the 2.0.2 update, explaining, in no uncomplicated terms, that the update controlled the UMTS power control in the phone. Each iPhone requires a small amount of power from the transmitter and that power is requested by the phone itself. If too many phones ask for too much power at once, the transmitter starts shutting down, resulting in dropped calls. The iPhone 3G was asking for ...
