October is shaping up to be a very good month for Angelenos who recently took a financial hit (or just anyone who likes a good bargain). Area carnivores can score a French Dip sandwich at Philippe's for just a dime Monday, and later this month, Canter’s will offer up large corned beef sandwiches with sides, for under a dollar. On Oct. 14, the venerable deli and restaurant will serve thousands of its famous corned beef ...

Summer is my favorite season. It's warm and sunny, there's plenty of fresh fruit as a treat for my sweet tooth, all the extra daylight makes me feel more productive, and of course there are summer trips. This summer, a lot of transit agencies reported historically high ridership. To help people to easily plan their trips, many transit agencies have turned to Google Maps to integrate their route, schedule and stop information. In fact, in the ...

We generally frown on companies showing slides during a TechCrunch50 demo. But FitBit (which demoed its health activity monitoring device live as well) put up this slide to underscore its point that obesity is a growing problem. The slide shows how the distribution of T-shirt sizes at the Linux Symposium has shifted towards the XL and XXL side of the scale. I’m convinced. Linux programmers need FitBit. Crunch Network: CrunchGear drool over the sexiest new ...

Since we started the first Android Developer Challenge late last year, we all have been eager to see who the winners of $275,000 and $100,000 would be. All 50 applications that emerged from Round 1 of ADC I showed great promise, and these teams have been working intensely for the past several months to polish their apps for the final round.Similar to round 1 we sent laptops preconfigured with the judging environment, emulator, and all ...

When we talk to developers, a common topic is the challenge of getting applications in the hands of users. That's why today I'm happy to share early details of Android Market—an open content distribution system that will help end users find, purchase, download and install various types of content on their Android-powered devices. The concept is simple: leverage Google's expertise in infrastructure, search and relevance to connect users with content created by developers like you.Developers ...

I’ve been poking around a lot of architects’ web sites lately and I’m thoroughly surprised at how bad they are. It seems almost without fail that they are either blowing my browser window up full size, asking me to read light grey 9px text, overflowing with obfuscatory flashterbation, teasing me with custom designed scrollbars that don’t behave as you’d expect, or asking me to evaluate their work based on postage stamp sized photographs. It really ...

Why do architects' websites suck? Because they design and build it like thier buildings - all fluff, no meat.

Too bad comments are closed on this post or I would have to weight in to agree. I recently asked my brother (an achitect himself) why it was so many web sites of architecture firms were themselves devoid of the design sense the firms practice in analog space. It was a long conversation, but I was shocked to hear that the things such as obscure camera angles and the inability to link directly to a page or image (because of how Flash was used) were things that were often done on purpose to deter others from infringing on the design (of the buildings themselves). I have to wonder at this... can't anyone just walk up the the real building wherever it is and actually see the entire thing?

The Times Online reports on the Dexter cattle breed, “the world’s most efficient, cutest and tastiest cows." For between £200 and £2,000, people can buy a cow that stands no taller than a large German shepherd dog, gives 16 pints of milk a day that can be drunk unpasteurised, keeps the grass “mown” and will be a family pet for years before ending up in the freezer. The Dexter, a mountain breed from Ireland, is ...
