Gregg Zachary happened by Barcamp Nairobi last month and had a chance to meet with a few of the techies who were lingering around after the event. Conversations from that night spurred his article today in the New York Times titled, “Inside Nairobi, the Next Palo Alto?“. It’s a good read on why Kenya, even after the violence in January and February, is still a tech hub in Africa. Between Skunkworks, Google Kenya and an ...Shared by Lews Therin (1) yapi (0)Contribute comment -
Does genuine tech innovation happen better in a recession? (1)

Anarchogeek - Home (0) permalink
I know this may sound a little counter intuitive, but bear with me. There are some important kinds of innovation in technology which require a recession and not full employment. In the late 90’s there was the huge dot.com boom, everybody who could code at all was working from dawn to dusk. Some people made huge amounts of money, some also lost it, others just worked endless hours. Then there was a collapse, huge numbers ...Shared by yapi (0)Contribute comment -

You just did it after me. I have created a new license that some of the articles (but not all) that I write will be released under. It is the Self Attribution 1.0 License. The crux of this license, similar to other popular licenses, is that it allows you to share, remix, or create derivative works of the works which the license is applied to. Jono DiCarlo, a former fellow co-founder of Humanized, and a gallivanting user experience firebrand, has condensed his design experience into a thought-provoking and irreverent manifesto. In sweetend condensed form, here is the manifesto: 1. Why do we code? For people, not for computers. 2. What do most people want? Not a computer. 3. Why does software fail? Its social effect is not what people want. 4. Why has Linux, which is free, not taken over ...Shared by Aleksas (3) Brian.LeRoux (4) Compuwizard123 (34) Jim (20) jonezy (21) Joshua Wilde (1) Litrik (8) Marco Gomes (10) Mark (1) Mike B (0) Nick (73) rchk (27) Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay (3) See-ming Lee (2) srid (5) Tim (23) yapi (0)Contribute comment -

When Apple first announced the launch of its iPhone platform, we wrote here that it is a game changer. Even the core of iPhone is a major advance in mobile computing, but with the platform iPhone becomes the new personal computer. The desktop from now on will be for professional and business work. Laptops aren't going away, but will get increasingly less personal use. The reason is that iPhone with its application platform is a ...Shared by yapi (0)Contribute comment -

A company called SynthaSite has just unveiled its new, improved and easier-to-use interface for building Web sites.SynthaSite’s goal is to provide a graphical drag-and-drop interface that enables un-Web-saavy business owners and even your proverbial grandmother to build their own sites. (No, seriously — one of the samples offered in the press release is a guestbook site created for the user’s 88-year-old mother. It’s called Grammy’s Corner.) To make that happen, usability is crucial, and SynthaSite ...Contribute comment -

Last week I talked about Google’s Global Cache, and how they will be housing this new project at Internet Exchange Points (IXP). A quote from Wikipedia’s definition explains the importance of IXPs best. “The primary purpose of an IXP is to allow networks to interconnect directly, via the exchange, rather than through one or more 3rd party networks. The advantages of the direct interconnection are numerous, but the primary reasons are cost, latency, and bandwidth. ...Shared by yapi (0)Contribute comment -
